Physician well-being is more than just burnout. Add other assessments to the Maslach Burnout Toolkit™ survey to assess total physician wellness.
Burnout is one of many elements of physician wellness. Other elements such as leadership, psychological capital, stress, fatigue, and quality of life are important to assess as well. Gather data for your physician well-being solutions by adding other instruments to the Maslach Burnout Toolkit.
There are many psychological assessments to choose from to assess personal well-being. We have selected a few wellness elements associated with medical personnel that can be measured by validated instruments. The elements we chose are:
LEADERSHIP is important for physician well-being because leaders are the people in the organization that implement wellness solutions and solicit feedback from employees. Healthcare organizations that support and develop effective leadership generates innovative solutions to problems, develops its people more fully and continually, and is more productive. Transformational Leadership, in particular, creates greater unit cohesion and safer work environments. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire™ (MLQ) is the benchmark measure of transformational leadership, using a 360-degree feedback format to assess leadership styles. Use the MLQ to set up your wellness solutions for success by developing your leaders now.
PSYCHOLOGICAL CAPITAL (PsyCap) is important for physician well-being because organizations with high employee PsyCap experience less cynicism, stress, and anxiety, among other desirable outcomes. PsyCap has also been shown to mediate the relationship between supportive organizational climates and employee performance. You can measure PsyCap with the Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ). Use the PCQ to assess and develop your employees' hope, efficacy, resilience, and optimism via self-ratings or ratings from observers.
ACHIEVEMENT / PROFESSIONAL FULFILLMENT is important for physician well-being because workers who feel that they have meaning, competence, self-determination, and impact have higher self-esteem and are more innovative and productive. Psychological Empowerment in the Workplace measures an individual's perception of having meaning, competence, self-determination, and impact in the workplace. Permission to use must be granted by contacting the Academy of Management Journal.
ENGAGEMENT is important to physician well-being because the more engaged employees are with work, the less likely they experience burnout. The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) measures the three dimensions of engagement (vigor, dedication, and absorption) and has shown that work engagement is negatively correlated to burnout. Permission to use the UWES can be obtained from author Wilmar Schaufeli.
FATIGUE and sleepiness are important for physician well-being assessments because the higher experiences of fatigue, the greater the risk for depression. There are many instruments that measure fatigue and sleepiness. The three we feature are Brief Fatigue Index (BFI) which measures severity of fatigue and impact on daily functioning; Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS) which measures levels of sleepiness throughout the day; and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) which measures a persons average sleep propensity across a wide range of daily activities.
STRESS can cause physical illness and emotional distress. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) is the most widely used psychological instrument for measuring the perception of stress.
DISTRESS encompasses the domains of depression, hopelessness, anxiety, and anger. The Psychological Distress Profile (PDP) measures those domains and profides a profile of psychological distress. Use the PDS to understand what types of health services and resources you may need to provide to your physicians to address their distress and promote their well-being.
QUALITY OF LIFE can be measured by several instruments. We feature Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and Linear Analogue Self Assessment Scale.
COMPOSITE WELL-BEING MEASURES. The Mini Z is a burnout survey that is part of the American Medical Association's StepsForward zero burnout program. It measures medical professionals' experience with burnout and their practice environment. The survey is submitted to StepsForward and they follow up with the participant with their results.
