Gary R. Elkins, Ph.D., ABPP

Dr. Gary Elkins a Professor and Director of the Mind-Body Medicine Research Laboratory at Baylor University where he leads a team of post-doctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students and clinical research staff. He was a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science in the Texas A&M University College of Medicine before joining the faculty at Baylor University.

Dr. Elkins completed his doctoral degree from Texas A&M University and clinical internship at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio. Dr. Elkins is a licensed psychologist and clinical faculty member of the doctoral program in Clinical Psychology at Baylor University. He is the 2014-2015 President of Division 30 of the American Psychological Association and a Fellow of the Society of Clinical Psychology (Division 12), Society of Psychological Hypnosis (Division 30), and Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy (Division 29). He is a licensed psychologist and has certification in Clinical Health Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology and Diplomate status from the American Board of Psychological Hypnosis. He has served as Vice-Chair of the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists. His research program has been funded by the National Institutes of Health since 2006 to present.

Dr. Elkins has over 70 publications and has presented over 100 workshops nationally and internationally on topics related to clinical psychology, health psychology, and hypnotherapy. Dr. Elkins is the author of Hypnotic Relaxation Therapy: Principles and Applications. He is the co-author (with Jeffrey Barnett, Allison Shale, and William Fisher) of the groundbreaking book, Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Psychologists: An Essential Resource, that provides a valuable guide for clinicians as they consider the expanding use of complementary and integrative care in professional practice.

In 2012, Dr. Elkins received the complementary and alternative medicine research investigator award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine. In addition, he has received numerous honors including: the Morton Prince Award from the American Board of Psychological Hypnosis, and the Presidential Award from the American Board of Psychological Hypnosis.

Dr. Elkins’ areas of research are hypnotic relaxation therapy, psychological assessment, symptom management, and mind-body interventions in behavioral medicine.
