Bernice S. Moos, now retired, was a Program Systems Analyst and Computer Programmer in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University and in the Research Service at the Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care System, Palo Alto, CA. She has participated in the development of several psychological assessment procedures focused on family and work environments, life stressors and social resources, and approach and avoidance coping skills. She has published widely on diverse topics, especially family characteristics and processes of recovery and relapse from alcohol use disorders, the long-term treatment careers and outcomes of individuals with alcohol use disorders, the interplay between family and extra-family social resources and the long-term course of depression, the influence of participation in Alcoholics Anonymous on individuals with alcohol use disorders, and 20-year patterns of alcohol consumption, drinking problems, and mortality among older women and men, and cross-cultural research on patient characteristics, treatment processes, and outcomes in Swiss and US substance use disorder programs.
